At least your way to done

Have you ever looked at a pile of papers and vowed to spend your weekend going through it, getting rid of it and then filing it away only to have another Saturday pass you by without taking any action on it at all?

Are you an all or nothing type of person?

Do you have perfectionist tendencies?

Do you plan things to death but never actually implement your plan?

You may be suffering from what I refer to as perfection paralysis. This is where you concoct some elaborate scheme in your brain to get something done but don’t take any action on it all until the pieces of your scheme are all in place.

Maybe you are telling yourself, “I’ll clean out my garage when I can afford to go by shelves and containers.”

“I will file my papers when I get a new office desk with file drawers.”

Want something more productive you can say to yourself? Try these two words on for size, “At Least.”

What? At least? No, no, no. We must do it all and do it now and do it perfectly. What is this at least crap? I can just hear you say to yourself now.

I’ll tell you what it is. It’s called Freedom.

Freedom to give yourself permission to do a little at a time.

Maybe you can’t take the time at the moment to completely wash, dry and put away your dishes. But maybe, you can “At least” fill up your sink with water and soap and let the dishes soak for a while so when you come back they will be easier and faster to clean.

What if you took that load of laundry out of the dryer but don’t feel like hanging and folding right then. “At least” what you can do is put the clothes in a separate clean clothes hamper and then commit to putting away five pieces of clothes by the end of the night.

Are you starting to get my point?

Point is, in order to do a lot, you still have to do at least.

So cut yourself some slack. Make life easier on yourself and give yourself permission to look for the “At Least” ways you can do things.

You won’t believe how much easier your life will feel.

Here’s to your best and most organized year ever.

Happy New Years everyone!
