Simplifying the Decluttering Process: My Approach
I recently shared some of my top decluttering strategies for garage spaces with the San Diego Union-Tribune, offering tips to make organizing this often-overwhelming area more approachable and impactful. The first goal in any garage organizing project is simple but crucial: create clear walking paths from front to back and side to side. This step not only makes the space easier to navigate, but it also helps clients feel less overwhelmed and more focused on the task ahead.
Creating Space for New Possibilities
Once we establish some space, the organizing begins! My primary focus is on creating more room, which ultimately means more options for how to set things up so items are easy to find and put away. The first hour of organizing, which I lovingly call the "pouting period," can be tough — filled with whining and resistance. But once decisions start rolling, clients get little dopamine boosts that help sharpen their focus and motivation. A key tip? Keep sessions under two hours to avoid burnout and save paperwork or sentimental items for later; start with easier purges.
The Power of Macrosorting
Macrosorting is another important step. Group oversized items on the floor, maybe set aside empty bins and boxes in the driveway, and create a section for trash. Don’t worry about the details yet; broad categories prevent overwhelm. Tackling larger items first — like old furniture or unused appliances — provides a big visual change and frees up space, giving a satisfying sense of progress. Then, head for the trash and recycling to finish off those “big win” sections.
Managing Energy Levels During Decluttering
Decluttering can be exhausting, but as a personal trainer, I recommend taking care of yourself physically by staying hydrated and pacing yourself. If energy dips, a break or a fresh start the next day can work wonders. Once sorted, start setting up zones for specific items; a little structure makes everything easy to find and maintain.
The Ripple Effect of Decluttering
Decluttering has such powerful ripple effects, often sparking positive changes in other areas of life. When we make room physically, we open up mentally and emotionally as well. Taking the time to get organized is not just about a tidy space — it’s about creating a life that feels lighter and more in control.
