Time to plan

Project Plan

To maximize our time and results, I've created a basic project plan to get started with.  Sub-tasks will likely emerge as we go through the process. As certain tasks emerge, they will will be discussed to determine whether action is needed on this project or at a later time.

Goals

Make the following spaces more functional and the items more easily accessible:

  • Kitchen
  • Kid's bedrooms
  • Kid's bedroom closets
  • Garage

Tasks

To achieve the goals above, the following needs to be completed:

  • Set up the kid's bedroom and closets so clothes are easy to access and put away
  • Decide what toys stay in their bedrooms and what gets stored in the garage
  • Create space in the garage for the overflow toys from the house and kids rooms and organize the toys
  • Organize kitchen items and use storage solutions for certain items such as pop containers, lazy susan's and pantry bins and pullout drawers.  See the recommended kitchen products list below
  • Possibly create space in the garage for overflow kitchen items

Supplies

  • To begin your project, organizing supplies will be needed for the sorting and purging steps.  Some you may already have on hand, some you may need to buy.  Bins and boxes used for sorting may also be used for long term storage.

Once things have been put in place, we will discuss the specific containers and storage solutions needed to customize your home.

Additional storage options

Racks may be necessary to set up your garage for long term organizing success. Once we have a better idea of what will be stored, we will then make our recommendations for racks if necessary.  Here are a few of our favorites:

Tracy's tips

Being organized is a wonderful way to live.  It makes life easier, more peaceful, productive and comfortable. But getting organized isn't always easy, peaceful or comfortable.

My simple, tried and true organizing tips are ways to get through the organizing process faster, easier and with less stress than ever before.

#1 Set aside important papers and items

This will help to ensure your most important items can be found quickly and easily during the organizing process.

#2 Set aside fragile items

Though we do our best to handle fragile items with care, we may not recognize it's fragile if it has clutter on top of it.  We recommend putting aside any items that are fragile and mixed in with clutter.

#3 Minimize distractions

We realize life must go on while organizing.  However, to maximize our time together, it's best to minimize any potential distractions e.g. text, phone calls, kids, work, meetings.

#4 Focus on quality sleep and relaxation

Try to get a good night's sleep before your sessions.  You'll need the energy to handle the physical work.  Relax after sessions to prevent burnout from over exertion. Clients who don't practice rest and relaxation before and after sessions tend to get sick.

#5 Stay hydrated

The organizing process can take a physical toll on the body regardless if you are actually doing the physical work with us or not.  Staying hydrated is the easiest way to fight off any sickness or burnout as a result of the organizing process.

#6 Communicate openly and honestly

To get the best results while working together, it's important to be open about your thoughts, feelings and preferences.  This will help us set up your home in a way that works best for you.

#7 Be open and willing

The more open you are to new ideas and insights and willing to make the changes necessary to improve your home the better your results will be.

#8 Keep our appointments

Do your best to keep our scheduled sessions.  Even one cancellation can cause a break in momentum, delay progress and put finishing the project at risk.

#9 Don't book anything after your session

Unless absolutely necessary, keep the rest of your day clear of appointments after an organizing session.  Relaxing after a session is important to the overall success and progress of your project.

#10 Give yourself a high five

Going through the organizing process is not always for the faint of heart.  Give yourself a huge hive five for being willing to take action and tackle your clutter once and for all.
