What’s a zig zag picker upper and cleaner?
Where you pick up something from the living room to bring into the bedroom. You get to the bedroom and see something that belongs in the bathroom.
Get in the bathroom and notice the mirror needs to be cleaned so you clean it.
Are you getting the picture?
It’s so easy to get stuck in this way of cleaning. When you clean like this, you are just in reaction mode instead of focused mode.
Zig zagging will actually increase the amount of time you are spending cleaning. Plus, it kinda feels a bit chaotic during the process because your brain is on overload and nothing ever feels completed.
Solutions for Zig Zagging From Room to Room
One Bin Method
Here’s a solution if you are a zig zag picker upper. Get one bin for every room of your house and set them up next to each other on the floor that you will start working in. Pick up everything in that one room and put in the container of the room it belongs in.
Ex: paperwork on the couch that belongs in the office or earrings on the kitchen table that belong in the bedroom.
When done picking up in that room, then distribute the items to their appropriate room. Repeat the process in each room.
The advantage of doing it this way is you focus your efforts on one room at a time and prevent getting distracted when you go into another room and then wind up never finishing the room you started in.
Then you have half cleaned rooms. That is of course you have the stamina and don’t mind spending the extra time to clean every room using the zig zag way if that’s the way you are most comfortable cleaning.
You may actually find, in some odd way, that going from room to room on auto pilot is the only way you can clean because of the inability to focus or stay in one spot for too long. I can be like that. That is a special mode, don’t use it exclusively or you will burnout.
And although I recognize it will take my house longer to get clean, sometimes it’s the only way I can get my house totally clean.
